On Friday, September 1, 2006, the facilities of chemicals distributor Brenntag, in the Spanish town of Caldas de Reis, were almost completely destroyed as a result of a fire.

Cleaning-up operations started in Caldas de Reis

Now that the immediate threat from the fire in Caldas de Reis has been controlled, further information is now available. Due to the high temperatures produced by the blaze, the stored chemicals were largely incinerated. However, a residue reached the river Umia in the water used to fight the fire.
